Hanover, New Hampshire fall foliage

Hanover sits on a terrace above the Connecticut River, with the Dartmouth Green at its center, ringed by white college buildings. The Appalachian Trail comes right through town and crosses the river into Vermont on the Ledyard Bridge. Just across the river in Norwich, Vermont, a short trail climbs Gile Mountain to a fire tower with a view up and down the Connecticut River valley, from the Green Mountains in the west to the White Mountains in the east.

Route 10 heads north from Hanover along the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut River, through river-bottom farmland with hills rising on both sides. In Lyme, about 10 miles north, the white Congregational church on the common has a row of 27 horse sheds behind it, built around 1810 and believed to be the longest such row in New England. Farther north in Orford, a row of Federal-style houses known as the Ridge looks across a long, tree-lined common toward the river. To the west, US 4 leads from White River Junction past Quechee Gorge to Woodstock.
