Keene is the hub of the Monadnock region, and its wide Main Street ends at the white church on Central Square. Mount Monadnock rises to 3,165 feet about 12 miles to the southeast, a lone peak with a bare summit that is one of the most-hiked mountains in the country. Just south of town in Swanzey, four covered bridges cross the Ashuelot River and its south branch within a few miles of each other, including the West Swanzey (or Thompson) bridge, built in 1832, which carries Main Street through the village.

A loop south of Keene takes in the Swanzey covered bridges, on quiet roads off Route 10 and Route 32 through the river valley. For mountain views instead, Route 101 runs east from Keene through Marlborough and Dublin, passing north of Mount Monadnock, which rises above the woods and ponds to the south.
