Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas, at 2,753 feet, and the most prominent peak in the state. In Mount Magazine State Park, a trail of about a quarter mile climbs gently to the high point on Signal Hill. From the mountain’s south bluff, the views look out over the Petit Jean River Valley to Blue Mountain Lake in the distance, and the Cameron Bluff area has more overlooks along the rim. Because the mountaintop sits so far above the surrounding valleys, its color usually comes a little earlier than on the farms below.
Scenic drive
Highway 309, the Mount Magazine Scenic Byway, climbs from Paris in the Arkansas River Valley past Cove Lake to the top of the mountain, then drops down the south side toward Havana. Petit Jean State Park is about 40 miles to the east.
