How these picks are made

We track 140 fall foliage destinations across the lower 48. For each one, the Leaves.com forecast estimates how far along the color will be on Saturday and Sunday and gives it a viewing score from 0 to 100, combining how much of the canopy has turned, how many leaves are still on the trees, and how much color the area can produce. The top-scoring destinations in each region appear above, and the list updates itself every day.

These are typical-year estimates, not live reports. A warm September, drought, or an early hard freeze can shift peak by a week or more, so check a local report before a big trip. Next weekend’s picks are the ones to use for booking a room; this weekend’s are best for a day trip.
