The town of Mount Shasta sits at about 3,600 feet at the foot of the 14,179-foot volcano it is named for, and its fall color comes from bigleaf maple, oak, dogwood, and aspen. Lake Siskiyou, just southwest of town, has a trail along the shore with Mount Shasta rising across the water. East on Highway 89, near McCloud, the McCloud River drops over Lower, Middle, and Upper McCloud Falls, linked by a trail along the river.

Highway 89 heads east from Interstate 5 to McCloud and the McCloud River falls, through forest below the slopes of the mountain. It is part of the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, which links Lassen Volcanic National Park with Crater Lake in Oregon.
