Jim Thorpe is an old coal-era town tucked into a narrow valley where the Lehigh River cuts through the mountains. Lehigh Gorge State Park follows the river north from town, and the Lehigh Gorge Trail runs about 26 miles along the old railroad bed beside the water, past cliffs and side streams. Above town, the Switchback Railroad Trail follows the route of the old Switchback Gravity Railroad, built to carry coal and later a famous tourist ride, past Mauch Chunk Lake, with a spur to the Mount Pisgah overlook above the town and the gorge.
