Burlington, Vermont fall foliage

Burlington looks west across Lake Champlain to the Adirondacks, with the Green Mountains rising to the east, and the color along the lake typically comes a little later than in the mountains. The Island Line Trail runs about 14 miles along the shore, from Oakledge Park through the city’s waterfront parks and across the mouth of the Winooski River, then out onto the Colchester Causeway, an old railroad bed built on blocks of marble that stretches about three miles into the lake. South of the city in Charlotte, Mount Philo State Park sits on a small mountain above farm fields, with a view out over the lake to the Adirondacks.

US 2 heads north from I-89 over the Sand Bar causeway into the Champlain Islands, then runs up through South Hero, Grand Isle, and North Hero with the lake on both sides, the Adirondacks to the west and the Green Mountains to the east. For mountain color instead, Route 15 runs east to Jeffersonville, where Route 108 climbs south through Smugglers’ Notch and down to Stowe.
