Blacksburg sits on a high plateau, at about 2,100 feet, between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny ridges to the west. The paved Huckleberry Trail runs from town through woods and farmland toward the Jefferson National Forest. In nearby Pembroke, a trail follows Little Stony Creek through a rocky gorge to the Cascades, a tall waterfall in the national forest, and Mountain Lake, one of only two natural lakes in Virginia, sits high on the ridge to the north.
Scenic drive
US 460 runs west from Blacksburg into the New River valley, with high ridges on both sides, toward Pembroke and Pearisburg. From there, Mountain Lake Road climbs north up the side of Salt Pond Mountain to Mountain Lake, with long views back over the valley.
