Leavenworth sits where the Wenatchee River comes out of the Cascades, with steep mountainsides rising on every side. In town, Waterfront Park follows the river among cottonwoods and maples. Just west of town, Icicle Creek runs out of a deep canyon of its own, and high in the surrounding mountains, stands of western larch turn gold among the evergreens.
Scenic drive
US 2 climbs west from Leavenworth through Tumwater Canyon, where the Wenatchee River crashes through a narrow gorge lined with maples, cottonwoods, and evergreens, and continues toward Lake Wenatchee and Stevens Pass. This stretch is part of the Cascade Loop Scenic Byway.
