Fall foliage bus and day tours

Peak foliage weekends bring heavy traffic and full parking lots to the most famous drives. A bus or small-group day tour from the city lets someone else handle all of that, and it’s often the easiest way for visitors without a car to reach the mountains.

How day tours work

Most foliage day tours leave from a big city in the morning, spend two to three hours each way on the road, and stop at a few scenic spots, a village, or a short walk before heading back in the evening. Small-group tours in vans can reach narrower roads and make more stops, and larger coaches are often more comfortable on long highway stretches. Some trips run overnight to cover more ground.

Before you book, check how much of the day is spent riding and how much is spent out of the vehicle, and where the stops actually are.

The city and the mountains peak at different times

This is the most important thing to know about foliage day trips. Cities sit low and stay warm, so they usually peak weeks after the mountains that tours head to. If you wait until the trees outside your hotel are turning, the mountains may already be bare.

Leaving fromCity typically peaksA common day-trip areaThat area typically peaks
BostonOct 24the White Mountains of New Hampshire (Lincoln (Kancamagus Highway))Oct 9
New York CityOct 31the Catskills (Hunter)Oct 13
Washington, D.C.Oct 31Shenandoah National Park (Skyland)Oct 15

So time the trip to the destination, not to the city. Look up where a tour goes, then check that place on the foliage map or on its destination page.

Tips

Bring layers: mountain stops can be 10 or more degrees colder than the city. Sit on the side of the vehicle that faces the views on the way out. Book early for peak weekends, and if the tour visits more than one area, check the fall foliage calendar to see whether they all peak around the same time.
