Litchfield’s historic town green sits on a ridge in the Litchfield Hills, surrounded by old homes and churches. Just west of town, the White Memorial Conservation Center protects about 4,000 acres of forest, fields, and wetlands, with around 40 miles of trails and a boardwalk through the marsh; its Apple Hill viewing platform overlooks Bantam Lake, the largest natural lake in Connecticut. Nearby, Topsmead State Forest has meadows and woodland trails, and Mount Tom State Park has a stone tower with views over the surrounding hills.
Scenic drive
Head west from Litchfield to the Housatonic River valley and follow Route 7 north from Kent. About 5 miles north of Kent, Kent Falls State Park has a series of cascades that drop about 250 feet close to the road. Farther north, Route 7 follows the river through Housatonic Meadows State Park to West Cornwall, where a red covered bridge crosses the Housatonic.
